For Frieze New York Christopher Page (b. 1984, U.K.) has made a series of new, trompe l’oeil paintings on canvas. These paintings, which at first glance appear to be three-dimensional, instead offer illusionistic depictions of windows and mirrors, built up in thin layers of oil and acrylic.
The depictions of ‘windows’ do not look out onto a life-like sky, but rather onto a virtual ‘sky’ that glows with colours more digital than natural. The illusory shadows render these virtual skies both deep and shallow, conjuring a strange pictorial space not dissimilar to that of an iPad or computer screen, where foregrounded icons cast impossible shadows onto background mountain-scapes. Similarly, Page’s ‘mirror’ paintings suggest surreal digital simulations, offering no reflection of the viewer peering in.
It seems prescient that Page has spent the last few months making paintings of digital windows at a time when we find ourselves confined indoors, staring out of our own windows and into screens, as the world around us appears to become ever more virtual.
Christopher Page (b. 1984, U.K.) lives and works in London. He received his MFA from Yale School of Art, 2011 and has exhibited at Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has taken part in the Instituto Inclusartiz residency program in Rio de Janeiro, and the Container Artist Residency 01. His work is in the collection of Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro.
