Hunter / Whitfield is pleased to present IMAGE / SING, an exhibition of new work by Patrick Berran, his first solo show in the UK.

Berran creates paintings thick with colour and form which all take their impetus from a book in which the artist sketches and paints when he is away from his studio. The resulting pages are transformed and enlarged to create the final artworks. Berran applies layers of silkscreen, as well as both spray and hand-applied paint to create palimpsests of imagery and tone.

The layers of Berran’s paintings evoke an urban, media-saturated world in which we are daily bombarded with images. Drawing varied influence from the visual language of skating and music ‘zines, as well as Indian tantric painting, the marks and patterns multiply, evolve and degrade as one looks at the works.

Bearing the traces of both human and mechanical making, the paintings seem to hum with energy and the interplay of colour, line, surface and texture create an enveloping visual field.

Patrick Berran received his MFA from Hunter College in 2006. Solo exhibitions include: Chapter NY, New York; White Columns, New York; South First Gallery, Brooklyn; and Thomas Robertello Gallery, Chicago. Berran’s work has been featured in exhibitions at Rod Bianco, Oslo, M+B, Los Angeles, CA, Jack Hanley Gallery, NY; Gavin Brown's Enterprise, NY; and iMOCA, Indianapolis, IN. Berran lives and works in New York, USA.
